About Backpacks for Kids

Established by Yolo County Supervisor Matt Rexroad, "Backpacks for Kids” began simply as a way to provide 50 backpacks for the Yolo Wayfarer Center. Little did anyone know that the need for backpacks and supplies was far greater than 50 backpacks.  It was decided that a day of family fun with food, music, games, and prizes might be terrific way to raise enough funds to provide for both the Wayfarer’s needs and the local foster care families.  Thus, the first annual “Backpacks for Kids” Family Fun Day was presented by Supervisor Rexroad the summer of 2007.

Though the event was arranged in very little time, the Woodland community pulled together volunteering and providing donations to make the event a success.   All the proceeds from the carnival went to purchasing backpacks and school supplies for over 250 children.  Donations of desks, bookshelves, bike helmets, gift certificates, and clothes provided for many additional children as well.  Given the success of that initial fundraiser, the “Backpacks for Kids” program was formed, and preparations for a 2008 event began right away.

Reality hit when time came to distribute the backpacks and supplies for the 2007/08 school year.  Supervisor Rexroad’s office was flooded with over 850 requests.  It was apparent that “Backpacks” needed to be a Countywide service and develop into a permanent organization.  Under the direction of Supervisor Rexroad, arrangements are being made to develop the “Yolo County Backpacks for Kids” non-profit organization.

In 2008, we formed a fiscal partnership with the Yolo County Historical Museum.  Their association means that your generous donation is tax-deductible and many more children will start the school year out right!

Now in its third year, the Yolo County Backpacks for Kids organization has raised over $60,000 in cash and in-kind donations and has provided for over 2,600 children county-wide.

Each year’s fundraising campaign launches in early May and backpacks and supplies are distributed to our schools and children in need in August for the upcoming school year.  The annual Community Carnival (formerly Family Fun Day) is held in July and concludes the material donation drive.  Cash donations are accepted year round.

Yolo County Backpacks for Kids relies on the generosity and the kind donations from the Yolo County community, businesses, and leaders. Our goal is to provide for at least 1000 children in need each year.  Thank you to all our donors.  You have made a difference in the lives of your local children’s education.
